Deben Cherub - ‘Ariel’ - £7,500

Built of larch planking on oak frames with teak sheer strake with gold cove line, she has an iron ballast keel and teak cabin sides with four portholes, two opening on cabin front. The transom is of oak. Ariel’s deck has been replaced with glass fibre matting over ply substrate. 

Ariel has a recently replaced Wykeham Martin furling gear and jib, a gaff mainsail, sail cover and full length boom tent. Down below she has a two berth cabin, a chain locker up forward and a galley to starboard with a two burner Origo meths stove and storage under. A cabinet to port with two drawers and further storage under the bunks. There is a lazarette under the aft deck containing fenders. Mooring warps are stored in the aft  cockpit seat locker.

Ariel has given much joy to the present owner who has sailed on the River Deben frequently spending nights on board.

It’s hoped a new owner will keep her on the Deben in company with other Cherubs.

Number 11 of the seventeen gaff rigged Deben Cherubs designed and built by Everson and Sons (now the Woodbridge Boatyard Ltd) Ariel was built in 1934 and was originally called Annette. She has been well maintained during her current ownership and won the Classic Boat restoration of the year award in 2020.

In the current ownership her topsides have been splined and caulked, she has a new mast and Samson post and has been fitted with a modern Dolphin 12HP petrol engine in keeping with her vintage. 

Ariel comes with two boat hooks and a 12kg anchor, chain and warp. Compass and depth sounder are mounted to port and starboard of the cabin doors. She has an automatic pump mounted on the keelson and a manual pump in the starboard cockpit.
