‘Ariel’ - Royal Harwich One Design

‘Ariel’ was the third of seven Royal Harwich One Designs built in 1937 by Sittingbourne Shipbuilding Company for the Royal Harwich Yacht club. Designer Robert Clark was asked to produce a boat to ‘race around the Cork Lightship under a boom that will not knock your hat off and be home for afternoon tea’.

The RHODs were a radical and modern design in their day and proved to be fast and seaworthy. Racing of the RHODs at RHYC was continuous and competitive until about 10 years ago when, unfortunately, the class lost momentum and racing stopped.

‘Ariel’ has been stored ashore for a number of years and requires some restoration to return her to her best but once afloat again, she will again be a charming boat for cruising and day-racing anywhere from the Deben to the Broads, West Country or the Med!
